BURKASAN IS PLAYING FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP IN RECYCLING

Burkasan continues to make its mark on a global scale with its investments in recycling and sustainability. Since 2020, Burkasan has been collaborating with Unilever-Turkey on using recycled plastics in a bottle-to-bottle model, positioning itself as a role model in Turkey. The result of this partnership is Burkasan’s modern, high-tech, and high-capacity plastic recycling facility, which not only contributes to the development of the recycling industry in Turkey but also significantly helps Unilever achieve its sustainability goals.
A delegation of Unilever’s global and Turkish executives visited Burkasan’s plastic recycling facility in Bursa to inspect its advanced technological infrastructure. Following this visit, a workshop in Istanbul organized by Unilever-Turkey deepened the sustainability partnership between the two companies and marked the beginning of expanding this collaboration to a global scale.

Increase in Recycled Plastic Usage

Hamit Candan, Global Sustainability Manager for Unilever’s Home Care Category – Hard Plastics, emphasized the critical role Burkasan plays in helping Unilever meet its sustainability targets. Candan noted that Unilever aims to reduce its use of virgin plastic by 30% by 2026 and 40% by 2028, and Burkasan is a reliable partner in achieving these ambitious goals. “At Unilever, we work with suppliers worldwide, and Burkasan stands out as one of the most advanced recycling companies globally,” Candan said. He praised Burkasan for its superior performance in both quality and process management, noting that they speak the same language in terms of sustainability.
Candan highlighted that Burkasan’s technological infrastructure and commitment to the same vision have strengthened the partnership, making Burkasan a crucial solution partner not only in Turkey but also in the global market. “By collaborating with Burkasan in our recycling processes, we are generating sustainable solutions both environmentally and financially,” Candan said, expressing hope for even larger projects in the future.

On the Path to Becoming a Global Player in Recycling

Burkasan’s General Manager, Birhan Denktaş, expressed his satisfaction with the long-standing partnership with Unilever, stating that the goal is to extend this collaboration to the global level. “We started this project with an idea in 2008, built one of Turkey’s most modern plastic recycling facilities in 2020, and since 2021, we have been producing the recycled raw materials used in the packaging of Unilever products sold in Turkey. Our top priority now is to elevate this partnership to a global level.”
Denktaş emphasized that Burkasan’s investments in recycling technologies have positioned the company as a leader in the industry. The modernization of their plastic recycling facility in Bursa has made Burkasan an essential supplier not only for Turkey but also for the global market.
He also mentioned that Burkasan continues to invest across various areas of the waste management and recycling sectors, adding that “Almost all of our investments are tied to specific projects. Our goal is to always provide solutions that meet our customers’ needs in recycling and sustainability. We are committed to continuing our investments both in Turkey and abroad.”

Burkasan’s Global Journey

Yasin Demirtaş, Burkasan’s Sales and Foreign Trade Manager, highlighted that the collaboration with Unilever has prepared Burkasan for larger projects in global markets. “We have a longstanding partnership with Unilever. Through this collaboration, we have successfully increased the use of recycled plastics and are on the path to growing in global markets.”
Demirtaş mentioned that Unilever executives visited Burkasan’s facilities to learn about the technological infrastructure and production capacity. “The improvements we made to our high-density polyethylene recycling line in 2022 have given us a competitive edge in the industry. At Burkasan, we produce recycled plastics that are as close in quality to virgin raw materials as possible, putting us in a strong competitive position in global markets.”
By supplying Unilever’s global operations with recycled plastics, Burkasan is advancing toward becoming a global solution partner. “Our interactions with Unilever offer significant opportunities for future projects. With our facilities, technological infrastructure, and team, we are ready for these projects. Burkasan will continue to create new opportunities in recycling and expand in global markets,” Demirtaş added.
